"Now if you are going to win any battle you have to do one thing. You have to make the mind run the body. Never let the body tell the mind what to do. The body will always give up. It is always tired in the morning, noon, and night. But the body is never tired if the mind is not tired."
- George S. Patton, U.S. Army General, 1912 Olympian
I came across this quote while surfing the web at work over the weekend. Considering this was my worst weekend ever to run, it couldn't have come at a more appropriate time. It seems ever since my 'cramping episode' last Saturday, I have been in pain ever since. I didn't run Monday, tried to run 4 miles with Phil on Tuesday and about fell apart, and didn't run on Thursday due to being so sore and in pain. Saturday, I had every intention of doing 10 miles. I just had to leave early to be able to do it before I had to be at work by 8am. By the time I made it to the crafts cabin, I knew my day was over. I limped back to the car and went home doing only 5 miles. I find it ironic that with two weeks to go, I am actually going backwards while listening to everyone having great runs. Anyway, enough about the whine party.......
So I'm having issues and don't know what to do. Then I read that quote from General Patton. That is so true. My mind quit on me before I finished my first mile. My mind controlled my run. When I didn't want to get out of bed Saturday morning, I knew it was over before it started.
Here are a few more quotes that gave me inspiration:
"Anybody can do just about anything with himself that he really wants to and makes his mind to do. We are capable of greater than we realize."
- Norman Vincent Peale, author
"Running is the greatest metaphor for life, because you get out of it what you put into it."
- Oprah Winfrey, talk show host and marathon finisher
"Hills are speedwork in disguise."
- Frank Shorter
"He who fears being conquered is sure of defeat."
- Napoleon Bonaparte, legendary military leader
"Running is a big question mark that's there each and every day. It asks you, 'Are you going to be a wimp or are you going to be strong today?'"
- Peter Maher, Irish-Canadian Olympian and Sub-2:12 marathoner
As Chuck likes to quote from the movie Cool Hand Luke, I'm gettin my mind right, boss! I will take these final two weeks and give it all I've got! No Retreats!! Reserves!! No Regrets!!
I AM A MARATHON RUNNER!!!
(a bit of a tired, broken down, achy, slow marathon runner, BUT ONE NONE THE LESS!! )

You still doing Nutrisystem? If so, maybe it's time to stop that for a while. I've found those days of really long miles wrecked havoc with my appetite, diet, etc. I have been as hungry as a horse and have been eating like a pig.
And it does take longer to recover. I usually bounce back pretty fast after "just" 10 miles, but I am still sore in the hips from Saturday.
You take care of yourself. Chicago is going to be great! See you there! (I'll be in Shreveport this weekend).
You did AT LEAST get out of bed on Saturday... That is more than I did last week..Give yourself a Break! You are such an inspiration!
As usual you put everything in perspective. You will do fine in Chicago. Stop worrying. One of the doctors that I work for is a Marathoner and he said that even if you didn't run another mile between now and then you still will be fine. Maybe you need to relax and then your muscle will start singing again! Suzanne
I love the quote by Patton...it is so true...I struggled big time on the 22 miles and my mind finally got control so I could finish. Sounds like you are getting your mind in the right gear for Chicago. I like what Suzanne's Dr. said about not running another mile and we would be fine. It took a while to get this stamina going and it will take more than a couple of weeks to take it away. You will be "psyched up" in Chicago and will cross the finish line either before or after the rest of us! Thanks for the quotes.
Give yourself a break and know that your body is probably telling you...."i'm TireD!"....it will get better..and the next long run will be too..and then it is off to chicago...
good luck to you...
Patti
Mark's been telling us our bodies are trained and ready, but the challenge now is mental. Sounds like you've been doing your research and working it out.
We can do it, Kelvin. We know we can. Start slow and pick up the pace as we move thru the miles for a strong finish.
We are marathoners. We'll get across that finish line, upright or crawling. We will do it together.
Debra
I felt your pain when you returned to home base Saturday morning. You had a bad morning but you are working through it and have made up your mind that you will do what it takes to cross that finish line! You have been inspiring and encouraging to all around you. You made us laugh when we wondered how we could take on such a task as 26.2 miles. You are a true Marathoner!
Sheila
I am not worried about you at all Kelvin. If anybody has the right "mind" for this, you do. After all, you're the one who cracks jokes the whole way through our runs. You are such an important part of this process that I can't imagine enjoying it this much if you were not for you. Thanks for the awesome quotes. They really do help!!
You can do it!
You got your mind right, now, Luke? Go back to your bunk, and get some rest, son. Tomorrow is another day.
Hi friend. Bad news. Wayne said no wrapping and no injection. Now what?
By the way, you are doing great. You are just probably feeling a little burnt out. Things will change when we are in Chicago! Are you flying Delta?
